Hi, I'm researching World War I as part of my Arts degree. Recently on Foxtel there was a story of a mother and her children who became ship wrecked off Timor or Indonesia during WWI. It was a remarkable story of survival, as they managed to get to a port and gained passage on a large sailing vessel to take them home to England. This vessel was subsequently sunk by the Germans in the Indian Ocean. In the 2nd episode of the ABC series, Australians at War (screened on History 27th April 2009), footage is shown of this sinking, referring to the Emden I'm interested in researching this for my history studies, but I've been unable to find out any more information. I've tried to google it with all sorts of permutations and contacted the War Memorial In Canberra without success. Is there any way one who can give me more information about this, please thanks, Chris L.

Chris, I too am interested in this era and have come across a lot of info that has been digitised at national archives. also I did notice some on australian newspapers beta version which may be of use good hunting Anne
